Welcome to the Heartbreakers Blog Hop presented by author Carrie Ann Ryan. The hop will be going on from February 8 thru 11, 2013, so join in the fun.
Heartbreakers, they are the characters whom readers want to shake and scold for wounding others. They are ladykillers, men who hook a woman just to watch her fall then leave her for dead. They are opportunists, women who tease a man making promises they’ll never keep mostly for the purpose of taking his wealth and usurping his prestige.
Sometimes heartbreakers aren’t so nefarious and are deserving of readers sympathy. They might pull away from love out of fear or expectations foisted on them by external factors such as family or society. For instance, the ambitious in historical novels are prone to marrying for convenience forsaking love as a consequence and creating a breeding ground for mistresses and courtesans. Take Kate Emerson’s series about The Tudor Court creating back stories for the wave of courtesans who occupied King Henry VIII’s court such as Jane Popyncourt in The Pleasure Place and Elizabeth “Bess” Brooke in Secrets of the Tudor Court. These women are lured by the luxuries and security that wealthy men can give them, but at the expense of having their hearts broken. It becomes a game to use marriage as a means to flaunt one’s acquisitions while sufficing their cravings for love through illicit affairs. King Henry VIII is a prime example.
Then there are those characters who run away from love out of fear of getting hurt. Attorney Samantha Greco in Cara Marsi’s Storm of Desire gives herself to Aiden Rourke, a local bartender/restaurant owner, for a one night stand. In the morning, she is gone leaving him with no explanation. She ignored his calls and avoided Aiden in town proceeding as though they were little more than strangers. Samantha starts a new life in Richmond and never sees Aiden again until one fateful night she returns to her mother’s house to find him there. Together, they figure out why Samantha ran away from him and once her fear is exposed, her heartbreaker days are behind her.
